At last it was time for our trip to Gloucester for the great annual Cheese Rolling event. We had two days to prepare ourselves, so Martin and I popped into Aaron and Anna's for bed and breakfast, and then we went to Camden to Cyberdog to get some shopping for the festivals we are going to his summer.
We also met up with a university friend of Martin's and his fiancee, and had lunch with them.
We arrived in Gloucester absolutely exhausted and went straight to bed after a fish and chip supper! Sunday morning arrived and we were given the grand our of Gloucester by Emma's parents. We went to the docks, the Cathedral, and my favourite place of the day.... the shop where Beatrix Potter based "The Tailor of Gloucester". It has recently been re-opened as a little gift shop and museum.
Monday arrived.....After being warned by several people that Cheese Rolling was really not the most sensible pastime known to man...... I had doubts!
Once standing on the top of Cooper's hill in Gloucester, and looking down feeling rather sick.... I seriously had doubts......
But as you all know, once I have my mind set to something, I find it very hard to go back..... I also didn't fancy the walk back down the side of the hill, as getting up there nearly killed me!!!
Lucky for Martin, Emma and I, it had been raining quite hard and the ground was very soft, so us girls decided to go down on our bums, whilst Martin tried to run and roll.
We all left to the chant of "Cheese, Cheese, Cheese.." and ended up safely at the bottom of the 20o yard hill within about 15 seconds. This may sound fast to you, but believe me, during the races the winners were going down in about 6-8 seconds!!! I also think the guy that broke him arm didn't think the ground was soft enough!!!!
